"The African black-throated honeyguide is an ordinary looking bird, but it’s far more cunning than most living things. Honey guides lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species. After the nestlings kill their nest mates, they consume the food foraged by their newly adopted parents. When food is scarce the ravenous chicks sometimes eat their parents.
A symbiotic relationship exists between the honeyguides and the tribes of southern Africa. The bird leads honey gatherers to wild bee hives. As payment, pieces of the hive are left for the birds to eat. Africans believe that if no payment is left, the honey guide will take revenge by leading honey collectors into the path of a lion.
